- On a free weekend your natural sleep window is roughly 02:00 to 10:00.
What lark and owl mean biologically
The lark-or-owl distinction is not about willpower or habit. It is about the phase of your internal circadian clock relative to clock time. Two biological signals define it: when your body releases melatonin in the evening (a marker called Dim Light Melatonin Onset, or DLMO) and when your core body temperature hits its nightly minimum.
For a typical lark, melatonin onset happens around 20:30 and the body-temperature minimum lands around 04:00. For a typical owl, those events happen three to four hours later — melatonin around 23:30, temperature minimum around 07:00. Forcing an owl awake at 06:00 lands the wake-up close to their biological temperature minimum, which is the worst possible moment to ask anyone to be alert.
Genome-wide association studies have linked more than 350 genetic variants to chronotype, mostly in genes involved in the circadian oscillator (PER1, PER2, PER3, CRY1, CRY2, BMAL1, CLOCK). About 50% of the variation between people is heritable. The rest comes from age, light exposure, and imposed schedule.
Who are larks and owls in real life?
Famous self-identified larks include Ernest Hemingway (writing at 06:00), Benjamin Franklin (the original early-to-bed early-to-rise promoter), and Tim Cook (rises at 04:30 to read email). Famous self-identified owls include Winston Churchill (peak work 22:00–03:00), Charles Darwin (read and wrote until after midnight), and Barack Obama (presidential briefings consumed at 23:00 onward).
Profession patterns matter less than people assume. Surgeons, firefighters, and bakers skew lark only because their schedules force it. Writers, programmers, and entrepreneurs skew owl in many cases — but that is partly self-selection into roles with flexible mornings.
Practical implications
Knowing your lark-or-owl band changes a few daily decisions:
- Cognitive work goes in the high-alertness window. Larks: late morning. Third birds: mid-morning to early afternoon. Owls: late afternoon to early evening.
- Hard training 4–6 hours before bedtime, which for owls means evening sessions and for larks means late-afternoon sessions.
- Caffeine cutoff 8–10 hours before target bedtime. For larks that means stopping by 13:00; for owls, 16:00–17:00.
- Light exposure in the first 30 minutes of waking, regardless of chronotype. For owls, this is the single most effective tool to advance phase if their schedule demands it.
- Travel direction: larks recover faster going east, owls faster going west. Plan high-stakes meetings on days 3–5 after arrival in the harder direction.

Am I an early bird or a night owl?
Judge it on a free weekend, not a workday — your alarm hides the answer. If you wake before 06:30 without an alarm and fade before 22:30, you are an early bird (lark). If your natural free-day sleep window is roughly 02:00 to 10:00 and mornings are a slog no matter how long you slept, you are a night owl. If you land in between and can shift bedtime an hour either way without much cost, you are a third bird — the largest group, about 55% of adults. Am I nocturnal?
No — humans are not a nocturnal species, and no chronotype makes you one. Even a confirmed night owl still has a melatonin rhythm timed to darkness and a core body-temperature minimum in the early hours; the whole rhythm simply sits three to four hours later than a lark's. What people usually mean by 'am I nocturnal' is extreme evening chronotype, or Delayed Sleep–Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD) when the delay is large enough to cause real impairment and does not shift with effort. DSWPD is reported in 0.17–1.51% of the general population, rising to around 3.3% among adolescents and young adults (Futenma et al., Front Psychiatry 2023). That is worth raising with a clinician; ordinary owlishness is not.
Is there an ADHD chronotype?
There is a strong association, not a separate chronotype. A systematic review of 62 studies found objectively measured delayed sleep onset in 73–78% of people with ADHD, with dim light melatonin onset delayed by roughly 90 minutes in adults (Coogan & McGowan, Atten Defic Hyperact Disord 2017). The direction of causation is still contested and the two conditions share genetic variants. Practically, the same phase-advancing levers apply — morning light, fixed wake time, low-dose melatonin timed 3–5 hours before target bedtime — but an ADHD diagnosis is a clinical question and no chronotype quiz addresses it.

What is a third bird?
Third bird is the popular name for the intermediate chronotype — neither a strong lark nor a strong owl. Third birds make up the largest single group, roughly 55% of adults. Their natural sleep window is in the 22:30 to 07:30 range and they have the most flexibility shifting timing.
Is being an owl bad for me?
On its own, no. Most of the elevated health risk associated with owl chronotype in epidemiological studies is driven by social jet lag — the mismatch between an owl's biology and an early-morning work schedule. Owls who can sleep on their biological schedule show much smaller risk increases than owls forced into 06:00 alarms.
Can a lark become an owl?
Not in any meaningful way. Chronotype is roughly 50% heritable; the underlying biology is fixed. Behavioural levers can shift your phase by one to two hours but won't flip the type. A confirmed lark who tries to stay up until 03:00 every night will become a chronically sleep-deprived lark, not an owl.

Why do I feel like an owl on weekends and a lark on weekdays?
You're describing social jet lag — the gap between your biological clock and your imposed schedule. The weekend pattern usually reveals biological preference; the weekday pattern reflects what your alarm and work schedule have forced. The bigger the gap, the worse the health and mood costs.
Are night owls more creative?
There is some research suggesting owls score slightly higher on divergent-thinking tasks, but the effect is small and probably mediated by other variables (more time alone at night, fewer interruptions). Both larks and owls produce world-class creative work — at their respective biological peaks.
What should I do if my chronotype doesn't match my schedule?
Three options. First, shift your schedule toward your chronotype where possible. Second, use behavioural levers — morning light, consistent wake time, evening light hygiene — to pull your phase by an hour or two. Third, accept the gap and at minimum protect the consistency of your sleep window so the social jet lag is constant rather than chaotic.
