Adult sleep cycles average 90 minutes. Deep N3 sleep dominates the first third of the night; REM sleep dominates the last third. The fixed proportions mean late bedtimes compress deep sleep and long lie-ins extend REM rather than recover N3. Is 6 hours of sleep enough for an adult?
For most adults, no. Population studies and controlled experiments converge on 7 hours as the lower bound below which cognitive, metabolic, and immune outcomes deteriorate. A small minority (roughly 1% of adults) carry a short-sleep genotype and function on 6 hours; the rest who feel fine on 6 are typically running an undetected deficit.
Can I catch up on sleep on weekends?
Partially. Weekend recovery sleep restores some cognitive performance but does not fully reverse the metabolic and immune effects of chronic weekday restriction. The pattern also creates social jet lag, which has independent costs. Better to fix the weekday schedule than to rely on weekend catch-up.
Why am I so tired even though I sleep 8 hours?
Three common reasons. First, undiagnosed sleep apnoea — affects roughly 20% of adults to some degree.
