History and origin
The Dymaxion schedule is attributed to Buckminster Fuller, who reportedly slept on four 30-minute naps every six hours during the 1930s and 1940s. Fuller eventually returned to a conventional sleep pattern after his business partners complained about the practical effects on collaboration. The 'Dymaxion' name is Fuller's coined portmanteau he applied across his designs (Dymaxion car, Dymaxion house, Dymaxion map).

Dymaxion has no peer-reviewed support and is the most extreme schedule in popular polyphasic discussion. Two hours of total daily sleep, like Uberman, exceeds the limits of every controlled adaptation study to date. The 6-hour spacing between naps makes it particularly hard on circadian alignment — the body cannot anchor to a single nightly clock signal.

Who actually adopts Dymaxion
Essentially no one sustains Dymaxion. Even within polyphasic self-experimentation circles, Dymaxion is treated as a curiosity rather than a target schedule.
Common failure modes
- The 6-hour gap between naps coincides with both the morning and evening circadian alertness peaks, making nap onset particularly difficult.
- Social schedules collide with nap windows for any normal job, family, or social life.
- Most attempters quit within the first three days because of the sheer difficulty of falling asleep during peak alertness windows.
How it compares to monophasic sleep
Compared to Uberman, Dymaxion has fewer total naps (four versus six) but the same total sleep time (two hours per day). The fewer naps make each one more critical and the 6-hour gaps more punishing than Uberman's 4-hour gaps.
