History and origin
Everyman was popularised in the early 2000s online polyphasic community, particularly through the blogs of self-experimenters Steve Pavlina and Puredoxyk. The structure — one short core sleep plus several 20-minute naps spaced through the day — is a compromise between the extreme Uberman pattern and conventional monophasic sleep. There is no scientific or military origin for the schedule.

There are no peer-reviewed controlled trials of Everyman. The evidence base is entirely self-reported from online communities. Published research on equivalent total sleep restriction (4–5 hours per night for two weeks) shows objective cognitive performance equivalent to two nights of total sleep deprivation, despite participants reporting they felt adapted (Van Dongen et al., Sleep 2003). This is the central concern with Everyman: subjective adaptation is real and objective adaptation is not.

Who actually adopts Everyman

Compared to monophasic 8 hours, Everyman delivers roughly 4–5 hours total daily sleep — a sustained 30–40% deficit. Compared to Uberman, Everyman is gentler: the 3-hour core preserves at least one full sleep cycle including REM, which the all-nap Uberman schedule struggles to do.
